More about Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a handheld device with small sterile needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This controlled trauma to the skin stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining healthy, youthful skin. The procedure can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and other skin imperfections.
Before the procedure, the skin is cleansed and a numbing cream may be applied to minimise discomfort. During the procedure, the microneedling device is gently glided over the skin, creating microchannels on the skin's surface. These channels trigger the body's natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production. Microneedling typically requires a few sessions to produce phenomenal results and is not considered a quick-fix treatment.

While microneedling is a safe and effective treatment, there are some minor side effects that should be expected. These could include swelling, discomfort, redness, bruising, dryness, flaking of the skin, and tingling sensation when applying products for up to 3-5 days after the procedure. Bleeding is a higher risk for those who have bleeding disorders or are taking blood-thinning medications, so it's essential to disclose this information to your dermal aesthetician before receiving treatment. Additionally, there is a small risk of more severe side effects, such as infection, changes in skin pigment, and reaction to topical medications used during treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DR.Pen and Skin Pen Microneedling?

The Dr. Pen device is used to provide superficial needling to allow a targeted serum to treat the area. No localised numbing is required for Dr. Pen microneedling. The Skin Pen device is the only FDA-approved microneedling device that treats ageing and acne scarring. Localised numbing is applied since the depth or needle penetration through the skin is much deeper. This allows the Skin Pen to deliver better results to the targeted area.

IS IT A ONCE-OFF TREATMENT?

No. The number of sessions needed can vary depending on the individual's skin concerns and goals. Typically, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results. However, some people may see improvement after just one session. It is important to note that results are not immediate, as the body needs time to produce collagen and elastin. The full effects of the treatment may take up to 6 months to be fully visible. Your dermal aesthetician can help determine the best treatment plan for your specific needs and goals.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes, microneedling can be combined with other treatments such as light chemical peels and dermaplaning. However, it is important to consult with your dermal aesthetician before combining treatments to ensure the safety and efficacy of the combination. Additionally, it is recommended to space out the treatments to allow for proper healing time and to avoid over-treating the skin. Your dermal aesthetician can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual skin concerns and goals

Is microneedling painful?

Microneedling may cause some discomfort, but it is generally well-tolerated. Before the treatment, a numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area to help minimise any discomfort. During the treatment, individuals may experience a slight tingling or prickling sensation as the needles penetrate the skin. After the treatment, individuals may experience some redness, dryness and mild soreness, but this usually subsides within a few days. If you have concerns about pain or discomfort during the treatment, be sure to discuss them with your skincare professional beforehand.

WHO CANNOT RECEIVE Microneedling?

Those who cannot receive microneedling include individuals with active acne, eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions that affect the treatment area. Additionally, those with a history of keloid scarring or abnormal wound healing may not be good candidates for the treatment. Microneedling is also not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as those with active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area. Individuals who have received botox or filler within the last week cannot receive microneedling as well.
